Traditional Reiki Ryoho

Traditional Reiki Ryoho

Gendai Reikiho incorporates Traditional Japanese Reikiho Traditional Japanese Reikiho, as taught by Mikao Usui and Western Reiki techniques.

In the spirit of Usui Sensei, Gendai Reikiho embraces purification of the mind, body and soul so we can live in the state of perfect harmony, peace and wellness — in alignment with ultimate Truth.

Traditional Japanese Reiki is becoming more widely recognized in the west. This is wonderful, but also, brings a measure of responsibility. GRNA is dedicated to ensuring accurate translation of the original and relatively unknown Reiki teachings from Japan, and to ensuring the highest standard for the on going teaching and practice of Gendai Reikiho — a particular expression of Traditional Reiki Ryoho. GRNA also aims to provide communication links between Gendai Reiki practitioners, students, the general public and other Reiki lineages.

The Founder of Gendai Reikiho

Founder of Gendai Reikiho

Gendai Reikho was developed by Hiroshi Doi Sensei, a Japanese Reiki master living and teaching in Ashiya nr Osaka, Japan.

Hiroshi Doi Sensei (Sensei means teacher), is the president of the world wide Gendai Reiki Healing Association, and also a member of the Usui Ryoho Gakkai, the original association formed by Usui Sensei. Born in 1935, Okayama, JAPAN, Hiroshi Doi became interested in the spiritual world and energy of universe while working for a large company, After having learned more than 30 healing methods and practicing western style REIKI(Usui Reiki Ryoho), he searched for the essential originsof Usui REIKI and encountered the ‘Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai’ which had gone underground at that time. Doi sensei was attuned by Ms Kimiko KOYAMA, the 6th direct heir from great founder Usui.

Subsequently seeking a practice of Reiki that is simple and suited to modern life yet holding the essential principles, Hiroshi Doi blended elements of western style REIKI with the principle of traditional REIKI and established ‘Gendai REIKI Ryoho’ and the Gendai Reiki Healing Association for his students. Gendai Reiki is based at Ashiya city, JAPAN, Doi sensei gives lectures and holds KORYUKAI there on regular basis.

The GRNA Board is happy to announce that Doi sensei agreed to visit Australia in 2007. The Board of GRNA are honoured to be sponsoring and organising this tour, more details of which can be viewed by clicking on the link at the top of the home page.

Traditional Japanese Reiki Ryoho (method)

“Western style Reiki is sophisticated and practical as it has grown from it"s origins in Japan. On the other hand traditional Reiki emphasizes the way of consciousness for raising spirituality and the techniques of self training for developing ability.” (Modern Reiki Method for healing, 2000 Fraser Journal Publishing Canada).

Traditional Reiki Ryoho differs from its cousin, Western Reiki in several ways which are outlined below. This information is taken from the Gendai Reiki training manuals written by Hiroshi Doi. Please note that Gendai Reiki is a mix of the best of Traditional and Western Reiki. Therefore, it does not only follow Traditional Reiki Ryoho practices. These notes are purely a comparison of traditional Japanese Reiki prescribed by Mikao Usu ( and made available by Doi Sensei) and general Western Reiki theory (this also differs from group to group).

In Traditional Reiki Ryoho:

  1. Reiki treatments are the starting point; the ultimate goal is the advancement of spirituality. An important tool towards this aim is the Gokai – 5 precepts.
  2. Reiki is given via reiju – a tuning given at Reiki shares.
  3. Reiki energy can be developed in the individual via gentle physical exercises similar to stretches.
  4. The symbols given in Reiki workshops are considered an effective tool for beginners to connect with Reiki, however one the individual understands the Reiki vibration they become unnecessary, like training wheels on a bike.
  5. The method of Reiki treatments also differs. In traditional Reiki healing treatments, Hand positions begin at the head.
  6. Once a Reiki channel is experienced, they scan the body to detect the site of disorder (Byosen), which sends out a negative and with practice discernable vibration. Practitioners send Reiki to the Byosen until the odd vibration disappears.
  7. Followers of Traditional Reiki Ryoho follow a system of 3 main levels of energy: Shoden, Okuden and Shinpiden. Within each of these are sublevels.

In Western Reiki however:

  1. the advancement of spirituality is encouraged but much emphasis is placed on Reiki healing treatments.
  2. Reiki is given via attunements at one off workshops.
  3. Reiki is developed through by practicing/ giving Reiki treatments.
  4. The Reiki symbols are orthodoxly used. They are gateways to accessing Reiki energy.
  5. Some Western Reiki lineages only follow the prescribed hand positions beginning on the body, rather than the head.
  6. Emphasis is placed on the Reiki recipient drawing the vibration where it is needed.
  7. Reiki practitioners follow 4 level of ability: Level 1, level2, and the 2 master stages, levels 3 and 4. The term ‘Master’ is a western adoption.

Reiki shares (Koryukai) are held in several Australian states. At these regular gatherings, short-term Reiki attunements (reiju) are given to Reiki channels and visitors. During the gatherings, high energy healing takes place. These meetings are usually by donation and are an excellent introduction to Reiki for newcomers as well as an ongoing way to develop their ability Reiki for practitioners.
